Many assignments that happen to involve reading are really meant to be measures of a student's other skills (such as discussion skills, critical thinking, writing, summarizing, or engaging with the content in some other way). When the act of reading is a challenge, these assignments unintentionally become a labor-some source of frustration, take much longer than the teacher intended, and sometimes even end in tears.
Listening to reading assignments on Audiobook platforms is a great way to remove this barrier to classroom and curriculum engagement! Students can follow along with the text or book while listening, so that they are able to stop at important parts and make a note or annotate when needed.
Below are some of my favorite Audiobook options.
Learning Ally is a Hamlin subscription. This app plays audio while you read along.
OverDrive/Libby:
Libby is a FREE app from the San Francisco library, created by the OverDrive platform. All you need is a library card. Download the app and start checking out e-books or audiobooks!
Amazon Audible is a paid subscription.
